Taman Ayun Temple, translating literally to "Beautiful Garden," is one of the most picturesque temple complexes in Bali. Built in 1634 by the ruler of the Mengwi Kingdom, this magnificent royal family temple is surrounded by a wide, elegant moat that makes it appear as if it is floating on water.

Architectural Marvel

The temple grounds are divided into three ascending courtyards, representing the three levels of the Balinese cosmos. The innermost courtyard, accessible only during ceremonies, features multiple multi-tiered meru shrines dedicated to various Hindu gods and deified ancestors of the Mengwi royalty.

The expansive manicured gardens, lotus-filled fish ponds, and traditional Balinese architectural elements make it an outstanding example of traditional landscape design. It was recognized as part of the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

Take a peaceful walk around the expansive gardens and the perimeter of the inner courtyard. The pathways are shaded and offer beautiful vantage points of the meru shrines.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Taman Ayun Temple is in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, when the golden hour sunlight beautifully illuminates the brick walls and multi-tiered roofs, or early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
