Often described as a miniature version of Besakih (the Mother Temple), Pura Kehen in the Bangli Regency is a stunningly preserved 11th-century state temple. Unlike the crowded major temples in the south, Kehen remains wonderfully serene, offering a genuine and undisturbed spiritual experience.

The Majestic Banyan Tree

Upon entering the first courtyard, visitors are greeted by a massive, centuries-old Banyan tree. This tree is so revered that a small shrine (kulkul) containing the temple's wooden warning bell is built high up in its intertwining branches. Locals believe that if a branch breaks, it is an omen of a disaster.

The architecture here is remarkably intricate. The temple complex is built on terraced levels moving up the hillside. The inner sanctum features an 11-tiered *meru* shrine dedicated to the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). The stone carvings, specifically the Chinese porcelain plates embedded into the temple walls, highlight the historical trade connections between Bali and China.

Temple Dress Code

As with all Balinese temples, a sarong and sash are mandatory. They are usually included with the entrance fee, but bringing your own is always a nice touch of respect.
