Besakih Temple:
Majesty on Mount Agung

Referred to globally as the "Mother Temple of Bali," Besakih Temple is the largest, most sacred, and most important Hindu temple complex on the island. Dramatically clinging to the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung—Bali's highest and most revered volcano—it stands as a monumental center of spirituality for the Balinese people.

An Enormous Spiritual Complex

Unlike a single structure, Besakih is actually an extensive complex comprising at least 86 separate clan temples and shrines. At its heart lies the Pura Penataran Agung, the Great Temple of State. Its towering, multi-tiered meru shrines reach up towards the sky, aligned perfectly along the mountain axis.

Besakih is recognized as one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagat (the six sanctuaries of the world), believed to balance the entire island spiritually. During major ceremonies, the complex transforms into a breathtaking sea of vibrant colors as thousands of Balinese Hindus arrive carrying elaborate offerings on their heads.
