Uluwatu Temple
Sacred Ocean Cliff Temple

Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is one of Bali's most revered and spectacularly positioned sea temples, perched dramatically on the edge of a sheer 70-meter limestone cliff plunging directly into the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. Founded in the 11th century by the Javanese sage Empu Kuturan, this sacred site is one of Bali's six key directional temples believed to protect the island from malevolent sea spirits and negative energies.
"Where sacred stone meets endless horizon—Uluwatu stands guard over Bali's wild southern seas."
Sacred Cliffside Architecture
The temple itself is a stunning example of traditional Balinese Hindu architecture, constructed from dark volcanic rock and adorned with intricate stone carvings of mythical makara sea creatures and celestial apsara dancers. The dramatic entrance gateway features towering split candi bentar gates and an inner courtyard accessible only to worshippers during ceremonial days, while the outer courtyards and cliffside walkways remain open for visitors to explore.
The entire temple complex is surrounded by the lush greenery of a tropical dry forest filled with twisted banyan trees and fragrant frangipani blossoms, creating a striking contrast with the deep blue ocean below. At the cliff edge, small thatched pavilions and viewing platforms offer unobstructed panoramic views, while a natural rock arch carved by millennia of wave erosion can be seen through the turquoise waters far beneath the temple foundations.
What Can You Do Here?
Cliffside Temple Walk
Stroll along the sweeping cliffside pathways winding through Uluwatu's sacred forest grounds. Pause at the tiered viewing platforms to admire the ancient candi bentar gates, ornate stone carvings of mythical sea creatures, and the sheer 70-meter precipice dropping to the Indian Ocean.
Mischievous Macaques Encounter
Observe the temple's famously bold tribe of long-tailed macaques as they swing through the banyan trees, groom each other on stone walls, and playfully patrol the grounds. Local guides can help you safely interact with these intelligent but cunning primates known for snatching loose items.
Sunset Panorama
Witness one of Bali's most extraordinary sunsets as the giant orange orb slowly descends behind the endless Indian Ocean horizon. Watch the sky blaze in fiery hues of crimson and gold, painting the ancient temple silhouette and crashing waves below in magical golden light.
When to Visit
Uluwatu Temple is open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, but unquestionably the best time to visit is the late afternoon from 3:00 PM onwards, allowing you sufficient time to explore the temple grounds before the legendary sunset. The dry season months from May to September offer the most reliable clear skies and spectacular sunset views, though the temple's dramatic cliffside location ensures breathtaking scenes year-round.
