Ulun Danu Beratan:
The Floating Temple

Perched on the western shores of Lake Beratan in the highlands of Bedugul, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is one of Bali's most iconic and deeply significant temples. Often referred to as the "Floating Temple" because of the optical illusion created when the lake's waters rise, this 17th-century sanctuary is a mesmerizing sight framed by misty mountains.
"To gaze upon Ulun Danu Beratan is to feel the cool, tranquil breeze of the mountains and the deep spiritual reverence of the Balinese people."
A Tribute to the Water Goddess
Built in 1633, this temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Balinese Hindu goddess of water, lakes, and rivers. Because Lake Beratan is the main source of irrigation for central Bali's fertile lands and rice terraces, the temple plays a vital role in ceremonies dedicated to ensuring an abundant water supply for local farmers.
The complex consists of several shrines, but the most famous is the 11-tiered Pelinggih Meru situated on a small island near the lake shore. Its striking thatched roof silhouetted against the lake and mountains is an image synonymous with Bali itself.
What Can You Do Here?
Lake Activities
Rent a traditional jukung (outrigger canoe) or a swan pedal boat to explore Lake Beratan up close. It provides a unique perspective of the floating shrines from the water.
Explore the Gardens
The temple grounds are beautifully maintained with colorful flower gardens, grassy areas, and ancient trees, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing stroll in the cool mountain air.
When to Visit
The temple is located at an altitude of 1,200 meters, so the climate is noticeably cooler. It is highly recommended to visit early in the morning around 8:00 AM before the thick fog rolls in from the mountains in the afternoon, which can obscure the view.
