Stretching across the shadow of Mount Batukaru, Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is a vast expanse of lush, green stepping stones that cascade down the hillsides of Tabanan, Bali. The name itself perfectly captures its essence—derived from the Balinese words "Jati" meaning really or truly, and "Luwih" meaning beautiful or good. It is literally "Truly Beautiful."

The Ancient Art of Subak

Spanning over 600 hectares, Jatiluwih is not just a scenic spot; it is a living, breathing testament to Bali's cultural heritage. It is the largest and most picturesque example of the Subak irrigation system—a traditional, ecologically sustainable water management system that dates back to the 9th century.

The Subak system is deeply rooted in the philosophical concept of Tri Hita Karana, which brings together the realms of the spirit, the human world, and nature. Because of its outstanding universal value, the Jatiluwih rice terraces and its Subak system were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

When to Visit

Jatiluwih is beautiful year-round, but it looks its absolute best when the rice is lush and green, typically between February to April. If you want to see the golden-yellow harvest, visit in June or July. For the best daily experience, arrive around 8:00 AM to beat the midday heat and the crowds, or enjoy the cooler afternoon light at 4:00 PM.
