Long before the Majapahit Empire migrated to Bali, the island was inhabited by the Bali Aga—the original Balinese people. Tenganan Pegringsingan in Karangasem is one of the most well-preserved and oldest Bali Aga villages, offering a rare glimpse into a deeply traditional way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

"Wander through walled compounds and ancient stone paths, where the threads of time are quite literally woven into sacred fabrics."

A Unique Cultural Enclave

The village layout is completely different from other Balinese villages. It consists of two long, identical rows of houses separated by a wide, stepped central courtyard built from river stones. The residents still strictly adhere to *Awig-Awig*, a set of traditional laws that have governed their community for generations.

Tenganan is most famous worldwide for its *Geringsing* double-ikat cloth. It is the only village in Indonesia, and one of only three places in the world, where this extremely complex weaving technique is still practiced. The cloth is considered sacred, believed to have magical powers that protect the wearer from sickness and evil.
