One of Bali's Six Sanctuaries

Pura Lempuyang is considered one of the *Sad Kahyangan Jagad*, or the "six sanctuaries of the world," which are the six holiest places of worship in Bali. While most visitors come for the famous photo between the gates at the lowest level, the entire temple complex consists of seven different sanctuaries strung along a steep path up the mountain.

Reaching the highest peak involves climbing over 1,700 steps through lush mountain forests, a pilgrimage that devout Balinese Hindus make with heavy offerings on their heads. The journey is physically demanding but spiritually rewarding, offering peace and serenity far from the tourist crowds.

Expect a Waiting Time

Because the main gate is a viral photo spot, there is a numbering system. Depending on when you arrive, you might wait anywhere from 1 to 3 hours just to take a photo. Arrive as early as 6:00 AM to beat the crowds.

Dress Respectfully

As this is one of Bali's holiest temples, strict dress codes apply. Shoulders must be covered, and both men and women must wear a sarong, which can be rented at the entrance.
