In the regency of Karangasem in East Bali lies a labyrinth of pools, fountains, lush gardens, and stone carvings known as Tirta Gangga. Built in 1946 by the late King of Karangasem, this former royal palace is a majestic testament to Balinese architecture and a serene escape.

The Holy Waters

The name 'Tirta Gangga' literally translates to 'Water from the Ganges'. The water in the palace comes from a holy natural spring situated under a Banyan tree at the site. The water is considered sacred by the Balinese Hindus and is regularly used for religious ceremonies in the surrounding temples.

The centerpiece of the palace is an 11-tiered fountain shaped like a lotus flower. The beautifully manicured gardens, adorned with statues from Hindu epics, create an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. The most famous activity here is walking across the stepping stones in the main pond, where hundreds of large, brightly colored Koi fish gather.

Feeding the Koi

You can buy fish food at small stalls right outside the entrance. The fish are very accustomed to visitors and will swarm around the stepping stones when you drop food in the water, making for a fantastic photo opportunity.

There is a designated swimming pool where visitors can take a refreshing dip in the cool spring water. Bring a swimsuit and a towel if you plan to swim.
