Perched dramatically on a rugged offshore rock, formed continuously over thousands of years by the ocean tide, Tanah Lot Temple is arguably Bali's most iconic and photographed landmark. The name itself translates to "Land in the Sea" in the Balinese language, perfectly describing its breathtaking geographical setting against the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

A 16th-Century Masterpiece

The history of Tanah Lot dates back to the 16th century, closely linked to the respected Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. Legend says that during his travels along the southern coast, he saw the rock island's beautiful setting and rested there. Some local fishermen saw him and brought him gifts. After spending the night, Nirartha instructed the fishermen to build a shrine on the rock, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods.

A fascinating piece of local mythology states that the temple is guarded by holy sea snakes. Believed to be created from Nirartha's sash (selendang) when he left the island, these venomous black-and-white sea snakes supposedly live in the caves at the base of the rocky island to protect the temple from evil spirits and intruders.

The Holy Spring Water

During low tide, you can walk across the beach to the base of the rock. Miraculously, there is a natural freshwater spring flowing from the ocean rock. Priests are usually there to offer a holy water blessing to visitors.

The Golden Sunset

The main reason thousands flock here daily is the sunset. The silhouette of the multi-tiered Meru shrines against the vibrant orange, pink, and purple skies is a world-class photographic moment.

Best Time to Visit

Without a doubt, the most spectacular time to visit is during the Golden Hour (around 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM) to catch the legendary sunset. However, if you prefer a quieter, more spiritual experience avoiding the heavy crowds, visiting in the early morning during low tide offers a serene atmosphere and the chance to walk right up to the temple base.
